It's playtime!

...no that hamster's not mine. It's just my favorite jpeg of all time (yes jpeg because one, animated gifs have an unfair advantage and two, chicks just look hotter in a lossless format) If I were Gregor Samsa this is what I would look like...I would finish my carrots and shit outside the box though. Incidentally it's exactly what summer felt like, just one big dream right out of Kafka. And yet here I am six weeks into the semester and I keep falling asleep on the first mile =P

Raffi - Bananaphone |
] |
After seeing Troy today, I came out of the theatre and saw around 5 people picketing for the war, strolling around the flags of who else but the US, UK, and Israel. And one of the guys held up a sign that read "ONE NATION UNDER GOD". Isn't that why Muslim extremists started crusading against us in the first place? It looks as if the people who currently support this war advertise it in a way that's counterintuitive. As Hector pointed out to Paris in the movie, when you visit a king on a peace mission, it is counterproductive to leave with his wife. If being on a mission to reclaim our freedom and security, and dare I say, our love affair with Israel are ostensible reasons to being involved and persisting in Middle Eastern conflicts, then it's proven to be more about exercising the big schtick and our thirst for oil in the case of Iraq. Although part of the problem now is that the big schtick has been suffering a bit of shrinkage in the eyes of the international community. The name of terrorism had been used to goad the American public into supporting the war in Iraq, just as Agamemnon relied on a noncommital Achilles to rally his troops. As Achilles says in the movie, it never ends:
"Let him taste something of what Muslims have long tasted from Apache helicopter fire and missiles," (al-Qaida statement released after the beheading of American hostage Paul Marshall)
"They're trying to get us to retreat from the world. America will not retreat. America will not be intimidated by these kinds of extremist thugs. May God bless Paul Johnson." (Dubya)
It may be the same card game but stakes are a lot higher with stacks of chips looking a lot like WMD's. Bluffing might not be the most effective idea anymore.
Two hours later, a good crowd of a couple dozen had gathered on the other side of main street protesting against the war. One of them held an anti-Reagan sign. I would agree that Reagan is 10X better than an alternative.
The movie itself I thought was an enjoyable adaptation, even if it's historically/mytically inaccurate. No Greek gods, and all the right characters die...but an introspective Achilles! Paris doesn't deserve to be the only one to survive the movie...all he did was back out of a fight and miss Achilles with his arrow, thus hitting the proverbial heel. Oh and Odysseus lived too but he is teh secks. Also it's interesting to think about how belief in a single underworld affected views on morality in ancient Greece. A dualist view of a heaven and a hell makes it harder on ourselves, raises more questions and creates ingroup-outgroup conflicts but maybe it does more good as a powerful check on human vice. As civilization and technology advances, worldly judgment just doesn't cut it anymore.
Hmm, back to finishing scripting for NS because every hax0r secretly knoes that skriptz = skillz LOLOL. Should stop indulging myself and start thinking about what I'm gonna do for the rest of the freaking summer.

Regarding "Fight Club":
" 'It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything,' he says, sounding like a man who tripped over the Nietzsche display on his way to the coffee bar in Borders." --Roger Ebert's review
" 'Fight Club' attempts to capture a malaise that is tentatively felt by an entire generation (perhaps only a western generation) who find themselves adrift in life, suspended in personal bubbles, separated from notions of passion, spontaneity, and each other." --Globe Vu's user review on imdb
I think most of hte storyline's too brutally fascist, cultish, and anarchistic, but the vein that it strikes on is still there...

Went to bible study like the narrator from Fight Club goes to support groups. Then I went with the whole bunch to the Oakland Ice Center and tried some ice skating for the first time. Got two ankle sores and a tenderized right butt but those falls sure got the adrenaline pumping

ABSK (asian baptist student koinonia) had their annual Thanksgiving celebration today...Pauley ballroom was packed and all of 60 turkeys were served. There was singing, a service, turkey, and various skits and performances by different classes/groups. We freshmen presented a five-part song-and-pantomime on the freshman ordeal...moving in, getting flyered, the DC, the blues ("Stand By Me") and the finale song to the tune of "YMCA". I rapped to "Ice Ice Baby", only fo rice and mo rice. Great fun; all the skits were great...David Nguyen in "Joseph & the amazing technicolor 'dreamcoat that got him in big trouble" hehe. The whole thing lasted all of 5 hours though...and I only barfed once XD
After a consolation meal at the DC, I went down to Underhill and threw a football around with Eric for 2 fricking hours. The guy never tires...while I have a mean bruise to show for it =)
A day of hedonistic yet masochistic mass time consumption.

Cal Band (Great!) - Big C |
] |
aaaaand the bears roll on! Cal wins the 106th Big Game over Stanfurd 28-16...so after Cal was shot down by the ducks, muffed the Huskies, and did their duty down on the Farm, the bears emerge with a winning season (7-6, 5-3 Pac-10) We're looking at the Las Vegas Bowl, Insight Bowl in Phoenix, or the Sun Bowl in El Paso...sweet colomba! Weird game today...the bears fumbled 7 times (yeah unbelievable) and didn't score at all in the first half...but Stanfurd capitalized for only 10 points...goes to show how effective their offense is hehehe. But Cal came out and dominated the second half, outscoring the Cardinal 28-6. It was like the ball was drawn to McArthur..can't believe he's no. 2 in the nation for receiving. My only regret? I wasn't there ><
I'm 18 today...hurrah! Had a clean birthday in SF... C says it all. Thanks a lot guys =) Now before they fire ze missiles I've got to register to vote.
And on November 22nd, forty years ago, America lost a president... "We stand for freedom. That is our conviction for ourselves; that is our only commitment to others." --John F. Kennedy

Bears steamrolled Arizona State 51-23 today...Cal is now 5-5 with 3 games remaining: at Oregon, Washington, and at Stanfurd. And don't fret over the loss UCLA, we'll get Stanfurd for ya!

I went with my floormates to the Castro district Halloween bash yesterday. I went as a priest because I had no costume...that turned out to be pretty interesting. At first, a couple ninjas bid me good evening, but a little later a nun with a beer belly turned around and shouted "it's your son!!" hehe. It was so crowded that people had to JAM into the BART...throngs of people for blocks. There were so many different costumes that almost any character, monster, persona, accident, or freak you could think of was there. I was literally grabbed by a babe...he was wearing only a diaper and a hamper, sucking on his pacifier hehe. That was after he put his arms around one of my floormates, dressed up as Henry VIII I think, even though he had one of his wives beside him...we were practically asking for it haha. Later on I damned a guy holding an "All Hail Evil" sign...and some guy swung a giant penis at me haha... It's all good though, I blessed a few people and forgave those who asked for forgiveness...except for one =) And of course there was a cutout "Ahnold" head riding on top of a car, looking rather like Frankenstein. And there was a guy yelling "there's too many straight guys here!" Now that's a San Francisco Halloween...

Thanks Amy for giving me the code to start my own blog...I wanted a journal to quench a desire that can't ever be satisfied cept with expression. I also see it as a place where I can exercise that sweet freedom of speech (...and tolerance?) without uttering a goddamn word...I'll speak truths and half truths, and I fully understand that anything can and will be used against me. ok...time for y'all to smash a pumpkin or something...happy halloween!
